Before large retailers were penalized if they destroyed unsold consumable food, as provided for by law in 2025, a national label was created. It rewards points of sale that initiate anti-waste actions. Example in a supermarket in Essonne.

At the back of E. Leclerc in Angerville (Essonne), Angelo, a volunteer at Restos du Cœur, collects products that are soon to expire and are damaged. “Lemons, a little apple, clementines“, he lists. They will be distributed to the beneficiaries during the day. “It helps us a lot“, he says. Every week, more than three tons of products are donated to four associations. Since 2015, the law has prohibited stores from destroying unsold food.

A label that interests stores

Alexis Bensussan, the store’s quality manager, has organized himself. Despite its good practices, the store continues to throw away more than 800 kg of food per week. To lower this figure, the law provides for the creation of an anti-waste label. Alexis Bensussan is therefore supported in his approach by a start-up, Phénix. And the label is of increasing interest to supermarkets. Lorena Padilla, anti-waste coach at Phénix, assures that her company supports “more than 1,000 brands“.
