The investigation is open for “violation of a grave, tomb, cinerary urn or monument built in memory of the dead, committed because of race, ethnicity, nation or religion”. The national gendarmerie had already launched an investigation on Wednesday, entrusted to the Compiègne research brigade in support of the criminal investigation unit (CIC) of the gendarmerie.

This Moulin-sous-Touvent cemetery contains 1,903 Christian and Jewish graves of German soldiers who fought during the First World War.

According to the gendarmerie contacted by franceinfo, the steles were broken or found lying down. There are no tags on it, so nothing that could allow, for the moment, investigators to identify the authors or their motivation. Still according to the gendarmerie, this damage took place between November 11 and Wednesday. On November 11, the Armistice ceremony took place during which no damage was noted. On Wednesday, maintenance workers came to work. They were the ones who discovered the steles in question. There is no video surveillance in the cemetery.
