On Monday, December 11, the National Assembly adopted a motion to reject the immigration bill. The executive decided to convene a joint committee as quickly as possible in order to reach a compromise on the text.
Tuesday, December 12, the National Assembly was still as electric after the snub the day before. Against all expectations, MPs adopted a motion to reject the immigration bill. Tuesday afternoon, La France insoumise called for new elections. The presidential camp was standing to support Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, who denounced the alliance which rejected the text and relied on opinion.
The Republicans will weigh heavily
Despite its rejection, the immigration law will however continue its legislative path. “The government will convene a joint committee as quickly as possible”, announced Olivier Véran, government spokesperson, Tuesday morning. This, composed of 7 deputies and 7 senators, will be responsible for agreeing on a common version of the text. The presidential camp comes first in this commission, but the Republicans will weigh heavily. They set their conditions and demand the text already adopted in the Senate.
