Montreal police have opened an investigation into an incendiary object allegedly thrown at the door of a Jewish community center early Monday morning.

The Council of the Jewish Community of Montreal announced Monday morning that its establishment in the Côte-des-Neiges district had been the target of a Molotov cocktail.

Emergency responders were called around 1 a.m. to a building whose location corresponds to that of the Council of the Jewish Community of Montreal, indicated the spokesperson for the Police Service of the City of Montreal (SPVM) Julien Lévesque .

Mr. Lévesque said firefighters transferred the investigation to the police arson squad, adding that no one was injured and that the building suffered only minor damage.

The executive director of the Jewish Community Council issued a statement condemning what he describes as a frightening rise in anti-Semitism and recent crimes targeting Jewish institutions in Montreal since the deadly Oct. 7 Hamas attack in Israel .

The center reiterated its request to governments for increased funding to better secure the community and its institutions.

Several other incidents occurred in the metropolis, including firebomb attacks that caused minor damage to a synagogue and a Jewish organization, as well as shootings hitting two Jewish school buildings.
