As part of the Cœur Outre-mer operation, the 20 Hours proposes to go to New Caledonia on the Signal islet, which is home to incredible biodiversity. But half of the species are threatened with extinction.

In the heart of the Pacific, New Caledonia has unique ecosystems. It is the largest lagoon on the planet, home to a biological diversity that is as beautiful as it is exceptional. Forests are among the most diverse on earth. But this jewel of biodiversity is threatened by human activities and global warming.

Many challenges

Thirty minutes by boat from Nouméa, Signal Islet attracts tourists, not without risk for marine fauna, according to the agents of this protected area. Raising visitors’ awareness of New Caledonian nature is one of the roles of a team of agents. To protect the islet, they have marked trails, created picnic areas or even installed a footbridge. “It’s hard to know whether we are harming nature or not, but I am convinced that if there are too many people, it will harm marine wildlife”, estimates a young man. Today, the incredible diversity of New Caledonian nature faces many challenges: mining, fires, overtourism, etc.
