Bayer, Volvo, Decathlon, Ikea, Nestlé, Danone, Heineken, eBay, Unilever… A little over a month before COP28 in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), more than a hundred companies are calling on governments to tackle fossil fuels to respect “the ultimate goal” of 1.5°C maximum warming.

“Our businesses are feeling the effects and costs of increasing extreme weather events due to climate change”, we can read in a declaration co-signed Monday October 23 by 131 companies. Some come from sectors specifically targeted for their environmental impact.

“We cannot achieve this transition safely and effectively alone. Financial institutions, fossil fuel producers and governments all have a crucial role to play”, are suing these companies. The latter particularly ask political leaders to “setting targets and a timetable for phasing out fossil fuels”that is to say without CO2 capture or storage.

The issue of fossil fuels, the major source of greenhouse gas emissions, will be at the center of the climate negotiations supervised by the UN at COP28 in Dubai. Many countries, including those in the EU, will push for the virtual elimination of fuels burned without carbon capture and storage.
