Many visitors were on the Normandy coast, Thursday June 6, for the 80th anniversary of the Landings. Veterans were decorated with the Legion of Honor.
Thursday June 6, the eyes of the world were fixed on British, Canadian, American and French veterans, to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. They were acclaimed by the crowd and by around twenty heads of state. Emmanuel Macron awarded them the highest distinction: the Legion of Honor. They were decorated at Omaha Beach, where they changed the course of history and the destiny of France in 1944.
The streets of Norman villages welcomed a million visitors. The spirit of the Landing seems more current than ever. Crowds flocked to try to catch a glimpse of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. At the Ver-sur-Mer memorial, it was time for contemplation. Faced with the names of the 22,442 British soldiers who died to liberate France, the king had a thought for the resistance fighters. In Colleville-sur-Mer (Manche), Joe Biden greeted American veterans. A visitor describes a day of commemorations “unforgettable”.
