The beginning of June was the hottest on record anywhere in the world. Scientists from the European Copernicus service have recorded unprecedented average temperatures on the surface of the globe: + 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels. The most ambitious limit set by the Paris agreement at COP21 has therefore already been reached, barely eight years later. 2023 is also marked by the warm El Niño current, which is known to raise temperatures.
Exceptional fires in Canada
All over the planet, extreme weather events are sweeping across continents. In Canada, fires of exceptional magnitude have ravaged nearly five million hectares of forest. Around the Mediterranean, the drought is much worse than the last two years. According to the World Meteorological Organization, there is a 98% chance that the next five years will be marked by new temperature records.
