A grieving father-in-law | The duty

I am the father-in-law of one of the seven people who died in seven days following a motorcycle accident in Quebec last week. Faced with this abnormally high number of victims, I cannot help but draw a correlation between the state of our roads, the management of road traffic and the budgetary priorities of the Legault government, which has been in power for long enough now to stop blaming previous governments for bad decisions.

The state of our roads first. As a motorist, cyclist or pedestrian, I am stunned by the number, size and depth of potholes. The disappearance of lines on the asphalt is also a problem and signage is sometimes deficient in dangerous places. All of this smacks of gross negligence. Road traffic now. It is now necessary to drive by casting more frequent glances in our mirrors in order to avoid those who arrive at breakneck speed and the zigzaggers who have a field day given the absence of patrol boats and photo radars. The solution ? Maintaining our roads, of course, improving patrols and installing photo radars. But where was my head? All this costs money and is not part of our budgetary priorities, the government of the economy being too busy playing Santa Claus.

Next time I get a check I didn’t ask for or pay the ridiculous $24 to renew my license, I’ll spare a thought for all those victims, some of whom might still be alive if we had a government that worked more on the correct management of current affairs than on its re-election. In short, thank you for having no vision, no strategy or no project other than to be still and always “in charge”. But “in command” for what, exactly?
