An outage is underway on WhatsApp Tuesday, October 25. Since around 9 a.m., Internet users from several countries including France have indicated that they no longer have access to the messaging application. Meta Platforms, WhatsApp’s parent company, confirmed the outage and said it was working to restore service. “as fast as possible”. The social networks of Meta, Facebook and Instagram, are not affected.
Shortly after 9:00 a.m., the French site DownDetector showed a spike in reports of failures, both in sending and receiving messages on instant messaging. Users are also reporting the inability to log in. The instant messaging application WhatsApp has 2 billion monthly active users worldwide in 2021, according to the Digital 2021 study by We Are Social-Hootsuite.

As is often the case with messaging outages, many users fall back on those that still work. The hashtags #WhatsApp and #Whatsappdown have thus multiplied on Twitter, with memes and hijackings on the breakdown, coming from all over the world. “When I go on Twitter to see if I’m not the only one having WhatsApp down and that I’m not the only one after all”writes one of these Internet users with the hashtag #whatsappdown.

On October 4, 2021, a global outage affected Meta’s services, rendering social networks Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp unavailable for seven hours.
