Gironde: a giant surf park project is controversial
Gironde: a giant surf park project is controversial – (France 2)
Artificial waves just 50 kilometers from the sea, is that reasonable? Opponents of a huge surf park project in Gironde cite environmental risks and health dangers.
Catch the wave and slide like on the ocean. All over the world, in Brazil or in the Swiss Alps, surf parks are becoming trendy and projects are being developed in France. In Canéjan (Gironde), near Bordeaux, a vacant lot could accommodate surfers 50 kilometers from the ocean. Residents are divided on this immense project. Édouard d’Algayon defends an eco-responsible project. “On this roof, the water is captured and goes into the pipes. We will store it in buried tanks louser be able to have a stock of water all year round”he explains.
Pollutants in the soil
Environmental associations are not convinced and denounce a waste of drinking water. “We estimate water consumption at 10 times more than what they announce”, indicates Rémy Petit, member of the Cénajan en transition association. Opponents also warn of health risks linked to polluting substances in the soil. Justice will have to decide.
