a garden created in the middle of a schoolyard to make children aware of the environment

There is now a garden of roses, pansies, lavender in the middle of the courtyard, all in asphalt, of the Gibert-Zola school in Cherbourg. It was a request from teachers at the town hall. Inaugurated on June 3, it is in place, well flowered and well maintained for a year by schoolchildren. This is part of a project called “Planète Manche” of the Permanent Center for Environmental Initiatives (CPIE).

The objective of this project, and therefore of this garden, is to make the little ones aware respecting the environment. It is little Ila who presents the garden to us and she is very proud of her plantations. “There are tulips, rosemary and we also found some bugs like ladybugs. We really liked this garden because it teaches us about the environment, that we should not crush the flowers because they are really perfect“, explains the little girl.

He also shows us the garden of the five senses. This is an idea of Claire Perrin, environmental educator at the CPIE du Cotentin. “Touching, smelling, feeling, resting in a quiet place with the vegetation around you is also a connection to nature“, she believes.

When a school is completely paved, children are disconnected from nature

She created, with the teachers, a real project around ecology. The children even learned songs on the subject and to continue to protect the planet, they have a small request. “We have no more money to buy more plants, please Mr. Mayor, help us again“, they said in chorus during the inauguration.

The mayor of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin has already said yes. The municipality will also create at the start of the next school year green courtyards in the schools of La Polle, and of Kergomard in Equeurdreville.
