The mission of the oceanographic ship Tara Polar promises to be exceptional. He should take the plunge on Friday October 4. With a surface area of 400 m², it will float in the Arctic with the ice and currents to study the effects of global warming.

With its space shuttle appearance, it could one day unlock all the secrets of the North Pole. The Tara Polar Station was built in record time in a factory in Cherbourg (Manche). It took just eighteen months to build a foolproof building. “It is 26 meters long, it will go at eight knots maximum. It is not designed for speed, but it will be indestructible”explains Vincent Lebredonchel, Ships Manager at the Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie (CMN) shipyard.

The station will depart from northern Norway. Scientists will then block it in the ice and let it drift with the pack ice for 500 days. Enough to allow them to study over time the microorganisms that live in the ice and their essential role for the climate.
