A new kidnapping in a country where kidnappings have become daily. A French citizen was kidnapped Friday, May 27 in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, announced on Saturday, Gary Desrosiers, spokesperson for the Haitian National Police. No details were given on the identity of the victim. “LThe authorities and relatives remain discreet about the investigations and possible negotiations because it is a question of not endangering the victim”specifies Radio France International.
The abduction occurred during the day in a residential area in the heart of the city, the spokesman said. The gangs abduct residents of every socio-economic level every day, demanding ransoms of thousands or even tens of thousands of US dollars. Haitians are the main victims of these kidnappings, but foreigners are also targeted.
These gangs have controlled the poorest neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince for several decades and have extended their hold in recent years. If the criminal gangs first clash with each other to expand their area of influence, they also attack the population. Between late April and early May, at least 148 people were killed by gangs in the northern neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince, plagued by clashes between rival groups.
