The senators adopted, on the evening of Wednesday February 28, the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution, by 267 votes to 50. Monday, Emmanuel Macron will convene Congress for a new vote.
The right to abortion was already guaranteed by the Veil law. By 267 votes to 50, the senators voted, on the evening of Wednesday February 28, like the deputies to enshrine the right to abortion in stone in the Constitution. “We will be the first country in the world to [l’] enshrined in the Constitution”, welcomed the Minister of Justice, Éric Dupont-Moretti.
“Encouraging” for women’s rights
A few hundred meters away, activists spent part of the evening following the debates. The result of the vote delighted them. “Enshrining the right to abortion in the Constitution constitutes protection of the right to abortion”confides a woman. “Encouraging to continue at the level of women’s rights”, believes a French woman. Emmanuel Macron will then bring together all parliamentarians in Congress, Monday March 4 in Versailles, to modify the Constitution.
