The toll of Belal’s passage is increasing in Reunion. The cyclone left a fourth person dead on the island, the police and the prefecture announced on Wednesday January 17. It concerns a man victim of carbon monoxide poisoning, caused by a generator. Aged around fifty, he died Tuesday evening at his home in Saint-André. This man had started his generator due to power outages caused by the storm.

Announced as particularly violent, Belal hit the north-west of Reunion Island with torrential rains and winds of up to 200 km/h. They caused significant damage, although less than that feared. The government will decree “early next week” the state of natural disaster in Reunion, announced the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, visiting the island.

The other three victims are homeless people. They had not respected the confinement instructions before the passage of the cyclone, according to the authorities.
