a former Roland-Garros finalist joins the armed forces!

NATO still does not appear determined to intervene militarily in the war in Ukraine, while fighting rages around kyiv. The Russians seem more determined than ever to take control of the Ukrainian capital. So, to defend their city, the Ukrainians are mobilizing. And some from other parts of the world. A few days ago, before winning the Dubai tournament, tennis player Andrey Rublev wrote about a cameraman’s lens: “No war please”, translate “No war please“. And as the world of tennis seems particularly sensitive to the armed conflict that is shaking the world, Sergiy Stakhovsky has decided to join the army in order to fight the Russian invasion on the front. The 233rd world player aged 36 has left to join the military in Ukraine, leaving his wife and children in Hungary.

The tennis player also said he wanted to alert public opinion by joining the three tennis stars, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer to his fight. “Djokovic sent me a message of support, we even exchanged a little. I tried to contact Federer and Nadal, I’m sorry but they preferred silence“, he says in an interview with La Stampa

But Sergiy Stakhovsky is not the only fan of the little yellow ball to want to take part in the conflict. The tennis player was joined by a former glory of the country, Andrei Medvedev, finalist at Roland Garros in 1999 and world number 4 in the 90s. Originally from kyiv, he won eleven titles on the ATP Tour, four Masters 1000, including the famous Monte-Carlo tournament in 1994, the year of his best ranking. On Twitter, the two tennis players proudly posed together.
