In his book “L’Homme de Tripoli”, Jean-François Lhuillier, a former French spy, looks back on his mission in Libya from 2009 to 2012. He recounts the fall and death of the Libyan leader, Colonel Gaddafi.

A secret agent comes out of the shadows and not just anyone. Jean-François Lhuillier is the number 1 ex-spy of the French services in Libya. He was in post for the DGSE in Tripoli during the “Arab Spring”, preceding the fall of Colonel Gaddafi. His ultra-secret mission is then very clear. “This is the mission that the Elysée has given to the DGSE: ‘Make the defection of Libyan personalities who could be turned against Gaddafi.’ In this context, Jean-François Lhuillier has set himself an objective: to weaken Gaddafi in particular by obtaining the escape of his Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The fall of Gaddafi

“You push people to betray their country, […] but also their beliefs”, explains the former spy. Moussa Koussa will defect. Meanwhile, the military operation carried out by France and Great Britain puts a fatal blow to Gaddafi’s troops. The rebels are at the gates of power. Jean-François Lhuillier also had the mission of approaching them and helping them. On October 20, 2011, Gaddafi was lynched and assassinated. Jean-François Lhuillier denies the rumor that he was killed by a French spy.
