Rare blockbuster in theaters, The Secret of the Lost Cityon the screens Wednesday April 20, dislodged The Batman at the top of the American box office. A craze undoubtedly motivated by its enticing cast: Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe and Brad Pitt as guest stars. But the actors themselves seem to have gotten lost in it.
Loretta Sage writes adventure bestsellers. A model, Alan embodies his hero for his book covers, and participates in the promotion of his latest work. When she’s kidnapped by an archeology magna, Alan wants to prove he’s not just a paper man. He launches out to her rescue in a jungle where there is a fabulous treasure to which she has the key.
Aaron and Adam Nee, moreover promoted since this Secret of the Lost City to the remake of masters of the universe for Netflix, make a film that has aged before its time. A mixture between The Magnificente (Philippe de Broca, 1973) and Indiana Jones (The Raiders of the Lost Ark, Steven Spielberg, 1981) where the big arms are feminized in Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock). It’s been since Alien (Ridley Scott, 1978) that heroes are feminized, but the tone here is parody, as in In pursuit of the green diamond (Robert Zemeckis.1984).
Why not ? Intended for the youngest, the film, wise as Loretta Sage, the heroine played by Sandra Bullock, is in the nails. But it does not take off, is shot without scale, yet in heavenly and spectacular settings, with stars. It is still Brad Pitt who is doing the best in his two appearances. Skinny.
Ambitious, the film is worth for its casting, where Sandra Bullock (also producer) replaces Belmondo and Harrison Ford together. The others had fun on set. This feminization is not enough to save a phoned film, written by five screenwriters, and produced by two, but probably not for two cents.
