How to do it, when in isolated territories, pregnant women have to drive for an hour for a simple pregnancy follow-up? In the Massif Central, midwives come to meet them in a converted motorhome.

Every morning, the camper-like truck leaves the city of Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dôme), heading for the villages of the Massif Central, identified as medical deserts. On board the vehicle, two midwives meet pregnant women who live isolated in rural areas. Hours of driving, in all weathers. Today, they install their truck in front of the town hall of Saint-Donat (Puy-de-Dôme), 200 inhabitants.

50 women were followed

In a few minutes, it’s like a complete consulting room that is operational. The patient of the day is a young mother, pregnant with her second child. She came with her companion and their 4 year old son, for a consultation of the third month of pregnancy, with ultrasound. The young woman works in a cheese dairy, her companion is a farmer. Without the midwives’ truck, the couple would have had to make arrangements to get to Clermont-Ferrand. The project started six months ago, it concerns a hundred municipalities. To date, 50 women have been followed.
