The Boramy ray (“full moon” in Khmer language), which was caught by a Cambodian fisherman in the Mekong, a river that crosses Cambodia, is the largest freshwater fish ever recorded, according to scientists. “In 20 years of research (…), this is the largest freshwater fish we have encountered or documented anywhere in the world”noted Tuesday, June 21 in a press release Zeb Hogan, director of Wonders of the Mekong, a conservation project funded by the United States.

Captured in Stung Treng Province, northern Cambodia, the stingray was released after receiving an electronic implant to monitor its movements and behavior. Threatened by overfishing, pollution and habitat loss, the species to which Boramy belongs is protected.
