A Spanish humanitarian ship arrived in Gaza on Friday March 15. This is the first sent by the European Union. Another, with a larger cargo, should follow in the coming days.

On Friday March 15, off the coast of the Gaza Strip, a Spanish humanitarian ship began unloading its cargo. The 200 tons of water and food are impatiently awaited by Gazan civilians. “I want help for my children. I want them to live and not die of hunger. (…) There is nothing to eat in Gaza,” explains one of them. However, Gaza does not have a port large enough to allow the ship to dock.

A temporary port under construction

The United States will build a temporary port, but it is expected to take time. Gazans should not be able to use it for several weeks. In the meantime, the goods are unloaded using a floating platform. It then joins a dike currently being manufactured. While the UN fears widespread famine in the Palestinian enclave, the Spanish ship is using for the first time the maritime corridor opened by the European Union between Cyprus and Gaza. Another ship is expected in the coming days with a larger cargo.
