A fire broke out on Saturday, December 2 in the middle of the afternoon in the town of Brando, a little more than 15km north of Bastia. The flames fanned by the wind threaten around fifty homes, indicates France Bleu RCFM. . The situation is under control this Saturday evening.

Residents are confined to their homes. 20 engines from the Haute-Corse fire brigade were deployed to protect homes. The 130 firefighters are supported by a military section made up of around a hundred people.

13 fires start in Haute-Corse

The fire started under the Brando quarry, in an inaccessible location and the flames spread across 100 hectares of thick scrub in a few hours, driven by gusts of wind from the west of around 150 km/h.

Fighting the flames is difficult. “It’s the sea that stops the fire”, declared Saturday evening on RCFM Thierry Cholet, the first deputy mayor of Brando. The fire jumped the road to stop at sea. Traffic is interrupted. The municipal protection plan was activated and the town hall premises were made available to road survivors.

There were 13 fires in Haute-Corse during the day. Some were treated quickly and had little impact. Others required heavier means to overcome it.
