A fire affected the hills of Colomars, on the heights of Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), Saturday April 1. Ten hectares went up in smoke. A man suspected of being the cause of the flames was arrested.

All day on April 1, firefighters fought the fire near Nice (Alpes-Maritimes). Started at 3 a.m., the fire covered 10 hectares, threatening homes. A water bomber helicopter was called in for help. During the night, 54 people had to be evacuated. Some have found refuge in a tennis club. “I tried to stay, but the police didn’t want to, they started to evacuate everyone”says a man.

Complicated weather conditions

Residents were able to return to their homes during the day. Meanwhile, on steep paths, tedious work begins for the firefighters: the journey of the edges in order to avoid any recovery. But the weather conditions are particularly complicated. “We haven’t had a lot of rain and the plants are suffering”, explains Captain Patrice Alberti, commander of the rescue operations. Tonight the fire is set. A homeless man was arrested. He would have lit a fire to keep warm.
