A fire mobilizes 150 firefighters in Old Montreal

Montreal firefighters have been battling a major blaze since 8 p.m. Friday evening that started in an unoccupied building on Notre-Dame Street West.

According to Sylvain Jalbert, section chief at the Montreal Fire Department (SIM), a call was made in the middle of the evening to report the fire ravaging 639, rue Notre-Dame Ouest, facing rue Saint- Henri in Old Montreal.

“Currently, we are engaged in full combat, in defensive mode,” he confirmed to The Canadian Press.

The fire, which is not yet under control, required five alarms. In doing so, 150 firefighters are currently working to contain the flames.

There were no occupants at the location and no injuries have been reported so far.

The firefighter intervention could extend over several hours, or even part of the night.
