A fire is in progress on electrical infrastructures in the Rungis wholesale market industrial zone (Val-de-Marne) and threatens other energy structures nearby, according to police sources and firefighters from Paris to France Télévisions, Wednesday June 29.
An oven fire broke out around 10 a.m., according to the firefighters of Paris. In particular, it spread to a gas catalyst, which is partly responsible for supplying energy to Orly airport, the Rungis market and part of the city. However, the fire had no consequences on the activity of the wholesale market, and caused no injuries.
According to the firefighters, the fire broke out at height and is therefore not accessible at the moment. The catalyst cannot be extinguished with water because it produces molten metal, which could cause an explosion. They add that in the event of the collapse of this catalyst, the fire could spread to other nearby catalysts, but also to a reserve containing ammonia. It is being emptied to avoid any risk of spreading the fire, according to the Paris firefighters to AFP.
The security forces deployed a security perimeter over several hundred meters. Firefighters, GRDF and prefecture agents are present in a crisis unit in the firefighters’ command post.
