The universe of Lord of the Rings will be entitled to a new feature film. A film centered on Gollum, the cult character of the saga and extremely popular with fans, will be released in 2026. This is what David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros Discovery, declared during a conference call on Thursday May 10 , according to the American magazine’s website Variety. Andy Serkis, who played the role in the original trilogy from 2001 to 2003 and made an appearance in an episode of the Hobbit, will be there again. The actor will also take on the role of director, while Peter Jackson, who directed the first three films, will supervise the project.
This new film has the provisional title The Hunt for Gollum (The Hunt for Gollum in French), Warner Bros Discovery said in a press release. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who wrote the screenplay for Lord of the Rings, “will be involved every step of the way”said the CEO of Warner Bros Discovery.
An animated film about the Rohirrim in theaters in December
The announcement of this new film is part of a broader development strategy for the Lord of Years universe, which began several years ago. Peter Jackson had adapted The Hobbit in a trilogy released between 2012 and 2014, with Martin Freeman in the role of Bilbo Baggins. Amazon, for its part, broadcast in 2022 the first season of a series also adapted from Tolkien’s world, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which largely divided fans.
Warner Bros. Discovery also announced in February 2023 the production of several feature films, under the supervision of Peter Jackson. An American-Japanese animated film, titled The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrimwill be released in December 2024. It will take place approximately 200 years before the events described in The Fellowship of the Ring and will be dedicated to the Rohirrim, the riders of Rohan who played a crucial role in the original trilogy.
The Lord of the Rings met with colossal critical and popular success, with nearly $3 billion in revenue worldwide and 17 Oscars, including 11 for The king’s return.
