Vergt Middle Ages, yes…

Vergt is a bastide built in the 13th century (in 1285). The plan of the city still bears witness to this: two long parallel streets framing the Place de la Halle; a half-timbered house. It is a bastide which was first English (Henry of Plantagenet) then French. Of the two initial parishes there remains a church, Saint John’s Churchas well as the oldest street called Sainte Catherine, today rue de la Chaminade.

Around Vergt, Greater Perigueux possesses a rich heritage of Romanesque churches (Cendrieux, Saint Mayme de Péreyrol, Saint Paul de Serre, Veyrines de Vergt) built between the 8th and 12th centuries. This past, of which only traces remain, asks to be (re)animated according to the association Vergt’missots who organizes for the first time this medieval festival, decided last fall.

“In order to provide historical landmarks, we are in contact with the Vergt school, which has shown great interest in this project”Explain Françoise Chambon, Secretary of Vergt’missots. Thus, educational panels mark out the course of the festival to locate the historical context of the exhibitions produced by the schoolchildren.
