It’s a word that Rachida Dati doesn’t like at all… And yet, while he was live on the show C in the air(France 5) this Wednesday February 7, 2024, editorialist Yves Thréard described the new Minister of Culture as a “Beurette”.
“There are people who identify with it because it is the little beurette who came up in the ranks, who succeeds. She is very attractive”, declared the journalist from Le Figaro. Comments that caused the Internet to explode… And for good reason, if the problematic term originally existed to designate young women born in France to parents from the Maghreb, this word has been used for several years in an extremely pejorative, even sexual and sexist, sense. As proof, in 2019, an American pornographic sign revealed that the word “beurette” was in first position in the top 10 searches in France.
A study which gave birth to the “#PasVosBeurettes” movement created with the aim of mobilizing against this term considered degrading.
“It’s okay now, stop!”
As a reminder, in 2015, during a visit to the set of iTVRachida Dati had already denounced the numerous nicknames that had been given to her in connection with her Algerian and Moroccan origins: “I won’t let it happen. That’s it. So if they want to make me, like some in Mr. Sarkozy’s entourage, call me a chicken thief, Arab, Arab, some calling me a zoubida, It’s going to stop now! Without telling you about the sexist attacks. So now it’s okay!” she declared.
