Scams: a fake free transport ticket offered in several cities

A public transport scam has been spreading all over France. Scammers are offering users a free transport ticket for six months, and are collecting bank details to collect small sums of money. Clermont-Ferrand is one of the most affected.

In Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dôme), the message has been circulating on social networks for several months. “Use transport for free for six months”, can be read there. A promise that is necessarily attractive, and that not everyone immediately identified as a scam. “It’s not inconsistent that we offer you six months of transport, especially since they advertise so much to get us to take public transport…”observes a Clermontoise. Trapped, Jasmine Mallet-Staadal not only gave up her personal information, but also her bank details.

The septuagenarian quickly noticed a withdrawal of 2.35 euros and tried to unsubscribe. These small transfers, which can go unnoticed, are potentially very numerous. The scam has now multiplied throughout France from Troyes (Aube) to Saint-Étienne (Loire) via La Réunion. In Clermont-Ferrand, the transport union filed a complaint and contacted users, but its options for action are limited.
