Many French people are already concerned about winter, due to the explosion in the cost of energy. The authorities are also preparing people’s minds, encouraging them to lower the heating to 3°C.

To reduce its gas dependence on Russia, Europe is officially asking its inhabitants to reduce their consumption. “I strongly advise all our compatriots (…) not to put the air conditioner too loud this summer and to lower the heating temperature by one, two or three degrees this winter”said Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, on BFM Business, Wednesday, August 17. The European Union hopes to achieve a 15% drop in gas consumption between August 1 and March 31.

“I think it’s abusive. We do what we want, at home, right?”annoyed a woman. “We’re going to be cold”, judges another. Currently, heating accounts for two-thirds of a home’s energy bill. Lowering the temperature by a few degrees in winter would save money. “The temperature in buildings, whether residential or tertiary, must not exceed 19°C. On average, in France today, we are (…) at 21°C”, notes Olivier Sidler, spokesperson for the négaWatt Association. Specialists also recommend insulation work on windows or pipes.
