A drone delivered two packages to the courtyard of the Coutances remand center, in the Manche department, on the night of Saturday October 22 to Sunday October 23, reports France Bleu Cotentin on Thursday October 27. An investigation is open, according to the prosecution.

The FO Penitentiary union says in a press release that, “around 3 am”an officer heard “an abnormal noise in the main courtyard” from jail. He approached the window, saw the drone heading towards the boardwalk yard, and alerted a supervisor. Meanwhile, the drone had dropped off its packages.

An agent then decided to seize the parcels, before the detainees could take them. Inside, prison guards discovered “cell phones, e-cigarettes and hacksaw blades”says the union, which calls for the installation of anti-projection nets to prevent this type of delivery.

An investigation has therefore been opened for “attempt to irregularly return objects to detainees” and “drone flight over an unauthorized area”, the Coutances prosecutor’s office told France Bleu Cotentin. The investigators seek in particular to identify the pilot or pilots of the machine.

The same weekend, a drone also dropped mobile phones and narcotics in the courtyard of the Fresnes prison, in Val-de-Marne.
