Chadians approved with 86% of the votes the draft new Constitution submitted by the military junta in power for two and a half years, declared the electoral commission according to provisional official results, Sunday December 24.

“They transformed the results, edited for a long time, to make them public today. It’s a shame for the country” denounced to AFP Yoyana Banyara, president of the Federal Bloc who called to vote no in the election.

For Max Kemkoye, the president of the Consultation Group of Political Actors (GCAP) who called for a boycott“the participation rate would be less than what CONOREC announced, everyone saw the day of the vote the boycott was respected.”

Final results expected on December 28

The participation rate in the December 17 referendum is 63.75%, announced the electoral commission. The institution welcomes the good performance of the vote relating only to “minor malfunction”. “86% of Chadians voted for the highly decentralized unitary state. However, we should also listen to the 14% of Chadians who voted no through the message they want to convey”notes the spokesperson for the yes coalition.

For part of the opposition and civil society, this election is akin to a plebiscite intended to prepare for the election of the transitional president, General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno and to perpetuate a “dynasty” initiated by his late father 33 years ago, already following a coup d’état.

The final results must be announced by the Supreme Court on December 28. This referendum constitutes a key step towards the return to power for civilians promised by the military junta and ultimately postponed until the end of 2024.
