Wednesday, July 5 will be released “Ennio”, a documentary film on Ennio Morricone. With 500 soundtracks, two Oscars and a multitude of unforgettable tunes, he is the most popular and prolific composer of the 20th century. The film retraces his extraordinary journey.

Ennio Morricone was an insatiable worker with sheet music, pencil and eraser. The one who composed more than 500 film scores imposed rigor even in his physical condition. A genius, who commanded the admiration of the greatest of cinema. “I have never experienced such a phenomenon“, assures the director Bernardo Bertolucci. “It was a myth. To work with Morricone was to wear a medal“, comments his counterpart Dario Argento. “His music was very innovative. It was already modern then, and it still is.“, adds for his part Clint Eastwood.

Ennio Morricone was composing in an office that looked like a shambles. A lover of classical music, but also of noises and sounds, the genius of the artist resided partly in his quirky discoveries. “I invented for Sergio Leone a theme from the cry of the coyote“, said Ennio Morricone. A few notes were enough to identify his art: the harmonica ofonce upon a time in the westthe whistle of fear over the city or the jew’s harp Clan of the Sicilians. Created to surprise or amaze, his music always ended up becoming one with the film.

He was also a chart-topper. We owe him in particular Here’s To You, sung by Joan Baez in an Italian drama. “Perhaps Joan Baez’s greatest success in France. So much so that (…) until her last tour in 2019, she could not conclude a concert without singing it“, says Stan Cuesta, author of Joan Baezat Hoebeke.
