The number of births reached in 2023 had not been so low since the end of the Second World War, indicates INSEE. Decryption.

In 2023, 678,000 babies were born in France, a drop of 6.6% compared to the last report. According to INSEE, this is the lowest number of births since the end of the Second World War. The fall has accelerated since 2010. How to explain it? The average number of children per woman is 1.68, much less than in 2010, when they had more than two children.

Later pregnancies

There are fewer pregnancies because they occur later: on average, mothers give birth to their first baby at 31, compared to 24 at the end of the 1960s. According to specialists, the cause is concerns linked to conflicts in the world, to the crisis environmental or economic context. At the same time, life expectancy continues to increase: 80 years for men, and more than 85 years for women.

The “grandpa-boom” generation could transform society, notably with “more expenses in terms of retirement [et] health”indicates Laurent Toulemon, demographer at INSEE.
