The documentary “The Ice Kingdom” is broadcast on France 2, Tuesday October 24 at 9:10 p.m. Among the subjects of study, orcas, which hunt in groups.

When orcas go hunting, they make the most of their numbers to fan out into the icy waters. Each has its place. They spotted prey: a crabeater seal, which is stronger and more combative than a seal. Weddell. The sharp fangs of this seal can be used to bite orcas. An infected wound could be fatal to marine mammals, but the pack does not shy away from its goal. So the orcas cause a wave beneath the surface to break up the ice sheet.

A pack hunt

Once isolated, seals are easier to dislodge. Three orcas manage to swim below the ice and knock over the seals that were on the block. They find themselves in the water and try to escape. One of the young orcas chases the crabeater seal, but it is powerful and manages to get back onto the ice just in time.
