All regions of the world are affected by attacks on press freedom. From India to Eritrea via Argentina, press freedom was threatened in 2023, according to a report by the NGO Reporters Without Borders.
Press freedom was undermined in 2023, according to Reporters Without Borders. In its report, the NGO warns of the increasingly serious threats from political regimes to the media. “Today there are political authorities, political groups (…) which not only do not fulfill their obligations to defend and promote journalism, but also may be those who contribute to the denunciation of journalism, to the public insult“, says Thibaut Brutin, deputy director general of RSF.
The question also arises in Europe
Eritrea, Syria and Afghanistan are the countries where press freedom is least respected. The situation is also critical in India, where the conservative Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has never given an interview or organized a press conference since his election. In Argentina, the new president, Javier Milei, is increasing verbal attacks against journalists and has closed the country’s most important news agency. In the European Union, the dynamic is not encouraging either, including in France.
