An unprecedented bird flu epidemic hits France. More than 15 million poultry have been slaughtered in the past five months. Butchers therefore have difficulty in obtaining supplies.

Getting supplies of free-range chickens is becoming difficult for Didier Lemoult, a butcher in the Paris region. “Usually, I have a delivery on Tuesday and Friday, and here, I only have one during the week”, he laments. The poultry are fewer and smaller: they were slaughtered prematurely because of avian flu. Customers will have to make do, especially since some businesses no longer have poultry.

These supply problems are due to a virus that is decimating farms. Vets call it “avian plague”. Very contagious, it can destroy 100% of productions. Chickens, geese, ducks… In six months, more than 15 million poultry had to be slaughtered to prevent the disease from spreading. A disaster for Frédéric Lapeyronnie, breeder in Haute-Vienne, since he lost 10,000 foie gras ducks. With the disease, the entire reproductive chain is threatened. On the other hand, the representatives of the poultry sector want to be reassuring and ensure that there will be no shortages.
