The Gironde prefecture bans the “Emergency braking against the South-West LGV” demonstration, scheduled for Saturday October 12 and Sunday October 13 south of Bordeaux, at the initiative of several environmentalist associations including Les Soulèvements de la Terre, a learned from franceinfo on Thursday.
The prefecture cites in a press release the undeclared nature of the demonstration, as well as a risk of “serious disturbances to public order, acts of blockages and sabotage, occupation or damage to sites”. Still according to the prefecture, “several thousand participants could potentially be present this weekend.”
In addition to prohibiting gatherings, the prefect of Gironde also authorized drone flights and the capture of images by the SNCF and the gendarmerie, the ban on the transport of fuel, the use of fireworks or firecrackers, and carrying weapons.
The demonstrators wish to protest against the Grand Sud-Ouest railway project (GPSO) which includes the creation of two high-speed lines, that of Bordeaux-Toulouse and that of Bordeaux-Spain. According to them, it plans to artificialize 4,800 hectares of land and weaken ecosystems. Work north of Toulouse has already started, and work south of Bordeaux should begin soon.
