France is tracking sources of pollution and energy waste. From here “the end of summer”, the rules prohibiting illuminated advertisements between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. will be unified, announced Monday, August 22 the Ministry of Energy Transition. It also intends to prohibit at the national level the open doors of heated or air-conditioned businesses. Both texts must be examined by the Council of State.

The decree on illuminated advertisements intends to harmonize the existing rules which already largely require their extinction from 1 am, but which now differ according to the size of the agglomerations. Stations and airports should not be affected. According to the Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME), a 2 m² digital LCD advertising screen consumes 2,049 kWh/year, i.e. the equivalent of the average annual consumption of a household for lighting and appliances (excluding heating). As for the ban on open doors in shops, it will now apply de facto in view of the winter.

While electricity and gas prices have soared to historic levels in Europe since the start of the war in Ukraine, France, like its neighbors, is preparing to implement energy sobriety measures which should also help to fight against global warming.
