Demonstrations took place across France on Saturday May 25 to protest against the “shock of knowledge” reform. Unions and parents are protesting in particular against the establishment of level groups at college.

Teachers and parents of students were united against the “clash of knowledge” reform, Saturday May 25. More than 200 people marched through the streets of Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle) to demand the abandonment of one of the most controversial measures of the reform, the establishment of level groups in French and mathematics in middle school.

“Research proves that level groups are catastrophic (…) for students whose families are furthest from school. This means that we will give up on the ambition of making all our students succeed , and for us, this is really unacceptable”, says Claire Ragot, mathematics teacher. In Tours (Indre-et-Loire), around a hundred teachers and parents gathered in front of the gates of the prefecture. The level groups must come into effect at the start of the school year for sixth and fifth grades.

Jean-Paul Ilot, professor of history and co-secretary of SNES-FSU, would prefer “less busy classes” and be able to “occasionally give a little more hours to students who need them”. The level groups are the one “unthinkable in a 21st century school”.
