More than five million euros were raised in one week to save Martin, suffering from a very rare genetic disease which disrupts the development of his brain. The little Czech boy was able to undergo surgery in Montpellier (Hérault) and was released from the hospital on the weekend of February 17.

Little Martin has come a long way, and his parents are finally smiling again. “I’m happy that all that is behind us. Now we can look forward and see it moving forward.”, confides his father. Martin was born in the Czech Republic two and a half years ago with a very rare genetic disorder that disrupts his brain development. Only an operation in France could save him. Czech Social Security refused to pay, so the solidarity of the whole country came into play.

An experimental treatment

As a result, more than five million euros were raised in one week. “200,000 people participated in helping Martin in one week, which is truly incredible”, says David Prochazka, organizer of the campaign to save the child. Little Martin was released from Montpellier hospital (Hérault) on the weekend of February 17. It will take a few more months to measure the effects of this treatment, which remains experimental.
