A “cyber incident” affects the National Research Council of Canada

(Ottawa) Parts of the National Research Council of Canada’s website have been taken offline due to a “cyber incident.”

A brief statement on the federal organization’s main webpage does not specify what type of incident it was, when it happened, or which apps were taken offline.

However, the largest federal research agency has been targeted in the past.

In 2014, a Chinese state-sponsored actor stole more than 40,000 files, including information about the council partners’ intellectual property, research and businesses.

The attack cost over 100 million to repair and a number of government organizations were involved.

Those details were revealed last month in a report by the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians, which found gaps in the country’s cyber defenses that could leave government agencies vulnerable to attack.
