Clashes between protesters and police erupted Monday in several areas of Peru, on the sidelines of a strike launched by carriers. The mobilization, which caused roadblocks and suspension of classes in several regions, was triggered by the rising cost of fuel and tolls, as well as food prices. They also gave rise to scenes of looting in stores.
“I appeal for calm, for serenity. Social protest is a constitutional right but it must be exercised in compliance with the law”underlined Pedro Castillo, whose government abolished a tax on fuels in a desire to appease. This is the first social conflict that the left-wing head of state has faced since his election in July 2021.
