IVG in the Constitution: a crucial vote in the Senate
IVG in the Constitution: a crucial vote in the Senate – (franceinfo)
The Senate will vote on the inclusion of voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) in the Constitution on Wednesday February 28. Mostly on the right, the senators could, however, put the brakes on it.
All eyes are on the Luxembourg Palace on Wednesday February 28. Will senators vote to include the iVoluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) in the Constitution? At the end of January, the National Assembly adopted the text supported by the government. This Wednesday, the senators, mainly on the right, like President Gérard Larcher, could seriously put the brakes on it. “I think that the Constitution is not a catalog of social and societal rights”he declared on January 23.
50 years after the adoption of the Veil law
The bill plans to enshrine in the Constitution the fact that “the law determines the conditions under which the freedom guaranteed to a woman to have recourse to an abortion is exercised”. In this recently modified text, the word “guarantee” offended some elected officials. They fear that this freedom will transform into an absolute right. Two amendments were therefore tabled. If they are adopted, the text will go back through the National Assembly. Otherwise, a vote could be planned for March 4 in Versailles (Yvelines) for abortion to enter the Constitution, 50 years after the adoption of the Veil law.
