Tuesday, September 12, in Gironde, a couple managed to survive the flames by diving into their swimming pool. But the husband, a fisherman, lost all his equipment and merchandise.
“It’s 40 years, 40 years of life…” These words are those of a man in shock. Christian Duniaud has always lived in the middle of the forest of Sainte-Hélène (Gironde). Tuesday September 12, the flames arrived quickly. Too fast to run away. He just had enough time to run and dive into the pool with his wife. “Every time we lifted our heads above water, we got burned”, says the man, a real miracle. The couple then comes out of the water, and takes refuge for a few minutes behind the pool. The flames bypass them, but they are alive.
In front of man, hectares of land burned are visible as far as the eye can see. In 30 minutes, everything went up in flames. The fisherman lost all his professional equipment: 60,000 euros in merchandise were stored in freezers. Like most of his colleagues, the fisherman was not insured. The costs were too high. However, thanks to buckets of water, the couple was able to save their house.
