Guest of 23h de franceinfo, Ziad Majed, professor of political science at the American University of Paris, discusses the reasons for the immobility of the Lebanese authorities concerning the investigation into the explosion of the port of Beirut in August 2020.
“Lebanon, currently, is the country of impunity”, says Ziad Majed, professor of political science and specialist in Lebanon. He denounces a ruling political class, established for decades, which protects itself against this tragic event which occurred on August 4, 2020. “It prevents justice from being independent, from investigating, from working”he adds.
These behaviors have consequences: at the political level, there is a paralysis and at the economic and financial level, the country is in an impasse. According to the UN, Lebanon is experiencing one of the greatest crises in contemporary history. For Ziad Majed, an international survey could make it possible to clarify certain gray areas and fill the absence of justice within the country. “It is time to let another political class emerge”, adds the professor of political science at the American University of Paris. As a reminder, in Lebanon, the mandate of the President of the Republic, Michel Aoun, ends at the end of August.
