A controversial British law allowing migrants who entered Britain illegally to be deported to Rwanda has been passed after a long battle. Rishi Sunak’s conservative government hopes to dissuade migrants from crossing the Channel.

The vote is historic. On Monday April 22, the British parliament approved a bill allowing the expulsion to Rwanda of asylum seekers who entered the United Kingdom illegally, regardless of their nationality. This marks the end of two years of debate and fighting between Liberal and Conservative MPs.

“A shame” according to Amnesty International

“This is horrible, cruel, inept and expensive legislation.”, underlines Tim Farron, Liberal Democrat MP. For his part, Conservative MP Andrew Sharpe considers the project “patriotic”. Asylum seekers will be deported by plane to reception centers in Rwanda, before their files are examined. If their request is accepted, they will have to stay in Rwanda. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak assures that the first planes will take off within ten weeks, the UN has asked London to reconsider its plan. Amnesty International for its part denounces “a shame”.
