A confirmed “privacy incident” at Sobeys

Two provincial privacy watchdogs say they have received reports of data breaches from Sobeys, which has struggled with ‘computer systems’ issues for much of the past week, affecting customers with prescriptions in certain company pharmacies.

The Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec confirmed on Thursday that it had received a declaration of “confidentiality incident” from the parent company of many grocery stores, including the IGAs of La Belle Province.

She said privacy incidents occur when there is unauthorized access, use or loss of personal information or any other breach of the protection of that information.

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta also said it had been notified by the company of the incident and was aware that an investigation is underway.

At the federal level, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada says it is in contact with the company to obtain more information and determine next steps.

On Monday, Sobeys parent company Empire Company issued a statement on the matter, saying some pharmacies were experiencing technical difficulties filling prescriptions, but did not elaborate on the origin of the problem and could not say when. disruptions would be fully resolved.

“The company’s grocery stores remain open to meet customer needs and are not facing significant disruptions at this time. However, some in-store services operate intermittently or are subject to delays,” the company said in the statement.

Sobeys’ website now says the vast majority of its pharmacy network is able to operate fully.
