Thursday, September 29, the section “An idea for France” of 13 Hours presents various initiatives to replace plastic waste. Among them, straws made with straw from the fields.

To put an end to plastic straws, a farmer had the idea of replacing them with rye stalks. Once the harvest is done, the stalks are cut, then those that will give the best straws are selected. “This first step consists of stripping the leaves, removing the plant part (…) to be able to reveal the straw, which will become a drinking straw”, explains Jeff Lubrano, designer and inventor of “La Perche” straws. The straws are then sterilized in an ozone bath. Better for the planet, they are washable and can be composted.

In addition to straws, plastic tableware has been banned since 2020, leading to inventions. “Today, we use waste to make edible tableware”, says journalist Valérie Heurtel, present on the set of 13 Hours, Thursday, September 29. Thus, plates are made with wheat bran and can be eaten. In Italy, potato peels are collected, macerated and then dried to become edible cones of fries.
